My Brain On Film
Why would I want to carry an extra notepad and a pen? Why would I want to shoot to an antiquated, grainy negative that required me to wait to see my photographs, sometimes for weeks?

Read MoreI haven't touched my digital cameras in a while. TRI-X is bizarre and great and full of sand-like grain and I love it. My binder of negatives is growing, but I'm finding that some genres of photography I practice are better suited to high resolution colour raw files, so I've decided to pick up my Leica M again and use that for colour work where appropriate.

Read MoreI bought a Mamiya 6 medium format rangefinder for shooting 6x6 negs. 2017 has become a year of gear and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I have to prove my purchases with some work worthy of the investments, though at the moment, I can't scan 120 film so I'm only shooting a bit. Black and white film is amazing, digital not so much.
Read MoreFilm has taken over my brain. I'm shooting a lot of Kodak TRI-X black and white on my Nikon FA now. I've also retired my favourite Summarit 35mm lens to be replaced by a faster Voigtländer 35mm F1.7 Ultron Aspherical. It's twice as long but hey.
Read MoreI love digital for everything that it does to produce predictable, high quality results, but in all that it does do, it does not allow you to appreciate photography in the same way that film does. There's a tactile and physical craft involved in film and it took me a long time to appreciate, and to let go of everything digital had taught me photography was supposed to be.
Read MoreI have a goal this year, and I have photo shoots and travel plans booked. I'm excited and anxious to get the train moving with my portraits. I have no idea where I will end up but I have a purpose and that purpose is to make portraits of amazing people while building a stream of professional work and momentum.
Read MoreI used to shoot extra frames just to make sure I was executing it right and getting the results, but over time I learnt to use other techniques to make my photographs in my head before I've even taken a single frame. I wouldn't have it any other way and have been applying it to my professional work.
Read MoreI've always enjoyed creating portraits, but I had all but given it up both aspirationally and technologically. The business side of things has been a constant battle in my mind, and with other new avenues to explore and keep me busy, I became complacent and unmotivated to start. Lately, though, I've had the nagging feeling that I need to push through that sense of inertia and just do it.
Read MoreNow that I'm writing a lot more than simple photo posts, I decided to change the black and white street and documentary into a "volume" series so it could sit alongside my essays and other articles in a more discrete fashion. I started at 101 because there's already so much of this in the blog history!
Read MoreI never quite understood the effect social media was having on my mental wellbeing until I took a calculated break from all three of my online presences, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The latter two I simply logged out and ignored, but Facebook I decided to deactivate, at least for a week or two.
Read MoreWe all go through lulls in creativity, but nothing has been more consistent in its effect than the seasons. There's something about the warmer months that means changes in behaviour, activities pursued and in turn creative opportunities.
Read MoreComing home from Bali was a bummer, but I was glad to get back into the swing of routine life. The strangest thing about travelling and returning is that you can feel so many different things towards either side of the flight. Bali was two weeks of non-stop novelty mixed with relaxation and excitement. Brisbane is home, routine, safety, comfort and familiarity.
Read MoreI'm breaking my own rule about this blog being mostly black and white. There's just too much nature in here to desaturate. Tom and I went sunrise hiking this morning over at Mount Greville in south east Queensland. Perfect weather, not a sound or soul in sight. Great way to start the week.
Read MoreThis weekend Simon, Rocky and I from the West End Camera Club flew to Melbourne for a quick two day run around the streets to make pictures. On Sunday afternoon I caught up with Remy, who plays Prince Jingim in Netflix's Marco Polo.
