The Ocean

My eyes roam far north and south.
My body senses freedom.
My ears hear the pulsing roar,
Unending yet never fearing.

I approach the white as it approaches me,
Tension rising.
I move closer as it turns to recede,
Glancing at me briefly,
A curious creature of the land.

The touch of cold laps at my feet,
Teasing the beginning of a smile.
The tumbling mess fills my vision,
Bright white under the morning sun.

My bravery rises to the challenge.
Legs submerged march forward with determination.
I take a plunge,
Sinking into the turmoil.

Breath escapes,
Ice grasps my back.
I relax and the smile teased broadens.

I made it beyond the edge of my earth,
To fill my soul with the vastness of the sea,
Opening out in front of me.
